Clothing and images of clothing - Museum holdings and their artistic representation in historical review

In 1969, costume historian Yvonne Deslandres appealed to her professional colleagues to intensify investigation into pictorial sources compared with similar preserved clothes; this demand is still relevant today. unquestionably, the analytical comparison of the two sources offers a wealth of knowledge, material and sociocultural aspects complementing one another. What stands in the way of that is that so far only a few of such correspondences between pictures and clothes are known. Against this background, the submitted survey intends to widen the available source material, in order to facilitate the desirable, methodically discriminating, academic research into that field. Over sixty named examples date from the 16th century to the 1930s. For the most part direct correspondences between preserved clothes and their representations--mainly paintings--are listed, but cases of great typological similarity are also mentioned.
