The new classification of ultrasonic placental grading

Based on the changes in basal layer, placental substance and chorionic plate in a vertical and tangent line section, we modified Grannum's classification of placental maturity. Instead of former four levels, the new scale has four grades: 1, 2, 3a, 3b. This prospective study included 500 pregnant women, with a normal, single pregnancy between 36 and 42 weeks of gestation. Difference between new placental grades measured by fetal biometrics parameters, tickness of placenta, birth weight and gestational age. It has been found a statistically significant difference between all placental grades except 3a and 3b. This classification has been good to predict of fetal growth retardation and like one of the parameters in biophysical profile.
