Possibility of trimethyl phosphate as a nonflammable solvent for lithium ion batteries

Trimethyl phospahte (TMP) is known as a nonflammable solvent, and is expected to be an electrolyte solvent which improve the safety of lithium ion batteries. However TMP easily decomposes reductionary and is not applicable with graphite anode. Recently we found that adding vinylene carbonate (VC) to TMP electrolyte enables graphite discharge, and adding Vinyl benzoate (VB) or dimethyl fumalate (DMF) rises the coulomb efficiency to the level of carbonate based electrolytes. Then we evaluate the properties of practical cells (designed 580 mAh) applied with 1M LiPF6 TMP+VC+DMF (84:8:8). The capacity is 550 mAh at 0.1C rate. But the rapid temperature rise was observed at oven test. In the latest study, we improve the problems by mixing a kind of fluorinated ether, HFE. The cells applied with 1M LIPF6 TMP+HFE+VC+DMF (44:40:8:8) improves both electrochemical and safety properties, and rapid temperature rise is no more observed in oven test.
