Technical barriers to trade significantly reduce the trade flows between countries. This paper uses the gravity model to study the impacts of the EU technical barriers to trade on the export of Chinese aquatic products. The authors adopt three measures of technical barriers which are sanitation standards; packaging and labeling regulations; and inspection, authentication and assessment program. They use a panel data of 10 European countries between 1998 and 2007 to analyze the impacts of these measures on the export of Chinese aquatic products to the EU. The study finds that the measures of technical barriers to trade in the EU play a significant role in the reduction of the export of Chinese aquatic products. The technical barriers to trade in terms of labeling and packaging regulations play the most important part among others.
