The article considers and questions a range of issues, approaches and terms closely related to the function of artistic work emphasising in particular aesthetic and more recent system-theory viewpoints. The dividing lines are clearly drawn between the classical, the modem and the post-modem. Starting from these aspects and related issues, the article points out the functions of artistic work that should be general and relevant to the artistic system as a whole, regardless of the space-and-time-related determinants, while buttressing this view by methods such as description, analysis, deduction and comparison.
