Integrated and sustainable development of water resources of the Luni basin in the Indian arid zone

Extreme variability in year to year river flow, rising urban and industrial demand for water, unfavourable siting of reservoirs and uncoordinated efforts for water resources development in the Luni basin have caused environmental problems in the Indian arid zone. Sediment deposition in the storage structures, soil and water salinization, drainage impedance and decreased aquifer recharge are some of the negative ecological impacts in the basin. Strategies for integrated and sustainable development of water resources include simulation modelling of runoff and sediment transport, comprehensive hydrological forecasting, upgrading and operation of hydrometeorological and water monitoring networks, environmental impact assessment of water resources development projects and water management through multiobjective planning, risk analysis and decision support systems for meeting the conflicting demand.
