Elasticities in innovative wheel suspensions have a large influence on the dynamic behaviour of all parts of the wheel suspension. Additional natural mode-shapes occur with natural frequencies in ranges which are relevant for ride-comfort. Hydraulic suspension bushings produced at Freudenberg Seals and Vibration Company are an outstanding compromise to solve the conflict between ride-comfort and handling. Tuning the dynamic stiffness solves the demands on comfort and handling, while the hydraulic damping oppresses the critical natural mode shapes in the system. A survey over the principles and effects of hydraulic suspension bushings is given. Computer aided development, simulation and optimisation of complete wheel suspension systems including hydraulic elements guarantee both shorter development cycles and the best compromise between comfort and handling as well as function and durability.
