Routing algorithm research of wireless mesh network has been the focus for the majority of scholars. Due to the fact that their standardization is still on the way, the currently routing protocols of wireless mesh network basically continue to use the algorithms in ad hoc networks. However, the ad hoc network routing algorithm is not entirely suitable for WMNs. Based on the analysis of wireless mesh network structure, this paper introduced the mechanism of load balancing and proposed a hybrid routing protocol (HRP) based on load balancing in WMNs, aims to achieve the load balance and improve the performance of wireless mesh network. The simulation results show that HRP compared with the AODV and DSDV algorithms has obvious advantages in the average packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and normalized routing load, and it is thus more appropriate for wireless mesh networks.
