摘要
The premises upon which the post-war global energy system has been built have been dramatically changed over the last ten to fifteen years. In the Light of increased scientific knowledge and public awareness about the adverse effects of power generation to man and nature, the world energy system is in a state of transition. This work aims to: a. highlight the current energy picture in the Mediterranean basin; b. identify the environmental concerns associated with this energy system; c. review the locally available energy resources; and, d. finally, review and assess the currently available and future energy technologies with regard to their role in fueling the sustainable development of the countries in the region. The above analysis is done taking into account the current trends of population and energy intensity evolution in the Mediterranean countries, attempting, thus, to provide a useful and comprehensive framework for sustainable energy policy in the region.
