摘要
A number of studies have addressed the ecotoxicological effects of metal or hydrocarbon contamination on benthic microbial and meiofaunal communities. However, essentially nothing is known about how these two classes of contaminants interact in their impacts upon such communities. The modes of metal and hydrocarbon toxicity are quite different, and individually they may elicit different ecological responses. We present the results of a study investigating the interactive effects of metals (2x or 4x the concentration levels described from a metal contaminated harbour) and diesel-fuel (concentrations at and above levels known to elicit a response) on the microbial, meiofaunal and benthic algal and microbial communities in a sub-tropical salt marsh. Results showed evidence of the interactive toxic effects of diesel and metals, illustrating that combined toxic effects cannot be predicted based on assessments of individual toxicities.
