The snakeskin effect in thin layers of nematic liquid crystals on metal surfaces

摘要：
The spontaneous appearance, development, and dissipation of regular structures with a specific orientation direction is detected in thin layers of nematic liquid crystals deposited on polished metal surfaces subjected to strain. A description and a qualitative explanation of the effect is given, and it is also shown that it can be used in the defect testing of materials. (C) 1997 The Optical Society of America.
