This paper examines the risks involved in writing with reference to the work and reflections of Chantal Chawaf. Focusing specifically on Chawaf's Delivrance brisee (Paris: La Grande Ourse, 2013) and on the controversy that followed its publication, and drawing insight from an interview conducted with the author herself, I present a brief case study of how a profit-driven culture, the commercial realities of the book publishing industry, and the risk of sanction influence the process of literary creation.
