We investigated the humoral response of patients with carotid atherosclerosis using a proteic extract from the atherosclerotic plaque as antigen. We identified and electroeluted a 12-kDa immunodominant antigenic band and assessed IgG1 and IgG2 subclass to this antigen in patients grouped according to clinical features and healthy subjects. IgG1 reactivity resulted significantly lower in patients with type II plaque than in nonsurgically treated patients, patients with type I plaque or healthy donors. These data suggest that the differential IgGl response to the lipoprotein component of plaque may reflect the progression of atherosclerosis.
