FTIR spectroscopic evidence of lowered chain interpenetration in thin polymer films

摘要
Lowered chain interpretation in freely standing thin polystyrene films was analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that the thin films of atactic PS exhibited the infrared (IR) bands characteristic of isolated or weakly overlapped chains. It was also found that IR bands increased with the decreasing film thickness and upon annealing the films above the glass transition temperature. The results show that the chains are less overlapped than in bulk in thin polymer films.
