Real time aircraft fly-over noise discrimination

A method for measuring aircraft noise time history with automatic elimination of simultaneous urban noise is presented in this paper. A 3 m-long 12-microphone sparse array has been proven to give good performance in a wide range of urban placements. Nowadays, urban placements have to be avoided because their background noise has a great influence oil the measurements made by sound level meters or single microphones. Because of the small device size and low number of microphones (that make it so easy to set up), the resolution of the device is not high enough to provide a clean aircraft noise time history by only applying frequency domain beamforming to the spatial cross-correlations of the microphones' signals. Therefore, a new step to the processing algorithm has been added to eliminate this handicap. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
