A fast algorithm of multiresolution elastic matching

The registration/matching of images that have been deformed with respect to each other means to recover the deformation. A fast algorithm of multiresolution elastic mesh matching in an application-free context is developed to register/match two images in this paper. An image deforms like a piece of rubber mesh towards its destination. The deformation is formulated as the solutions of linear systems and proceeds from coarse scale to finer ones. The main advantage in our method is that the deformations are seperated into two independent directions X and Y, and then dealt with independently. Consequently, the computational complexity is lessened compared with other existing deformable object based methods. In addition, the computation involved in this algorithm is limited mainly to the deformed areas of images, and the more the deformation, the more the computation. Two experiments are presented for matching a pair of medical image slices and a stereo image pair.
