Ternary phases in the system Al/Si/C emerge during the processing of aluminium/silicon carbide cermets. Single crystals of the phases alpha-Al4SiC4, Al8SiC7 and "12R-Al4SiC4" could be obtained. "12R-Al4SiC4" is not a packing variant of alpha-Al4SiC4 but a quinternary phase with the tentative composition Al6SiBC4N. Characterization was done by X-ray crystal structure analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis was done by the means of WDX investigations.
