Site selection for radioactive waste disposal:: Results of a screening process in North-West Russia

In the framework of a Tacis project funded by the European Union, the design and siting of an underground repository for low and intermediate-level radioactive wastes in North-West Russia is being carried out. Twenty-five potentially appropriate areas were examined and screened using geoscientific selection criteria, thus resulting in the recommendation of 7 suitable sites. One preferred site should emerge subsequently, following a preliminary radiological safety assessment and multi-criteria analysis, including economic and other environmental factors. Finally, in-situ investigation programmes for later confirmation of the site are outlined in the project.
