The effect of strong and weak magnetic fields on the synthesis of SWNTs

摘要
The growth process of SWNTs in arc-discharge method was controlled by external magnetic field. For a discharge current of 70A, SWNTs were efficiently produced only when the applied magnetic field was parallel to the current direction and their intensities were less than 0.5T On the other hand, the yields were very poor in strong (> 0.5 T) and weak magnetic field (< 0.05 T) intensities applied parallel and perpendicular to the current direction, respectively. This was believed due to forced convection stimulated by Lorentz force. However, high yield of SWNTs with smaller diameter was synthesized at lower discharge current and strong magnetic field applied parallel to each other.
