This chapter introduces the concept of digital forestry, and explains how it has provided the motivation for this volume. We also provide a brief overview of some major disciplinary areas as a prelude to more in-depth discussions of subsequent chapters, introduce the remaining chapters of this volume, and describe the goals and objectives of this work.
