摘要
The antiquity of the choir-stalls at Rochester Cathedral is not generally realised on account of their restored Victorian appearance. George Gilbert Scott's reconstitution of the furniture was carried out in a scholarly way, and has preserved for future generations a reliable representation of the form of the monument. The restoration process is described in some detail here, and an attempt is made to place these unique choir-stalls in a stylistic context, not only in terms of the so-called 'vestry' screenwork in the cathedral itself, but also the later choir fittings at Christ Church, Canterbury.
