摘要：
Premature babies have to endure a number of medical procedures during their care but it is unknown to what extent they feel pain. Pain-coding scales are currently used to assess the level of pain a premature baby may be feeling but these are not true measuress of pain as they can be influenced by other conditions such as hunger and cold. Blood flow to the somatosensory cortex was observed to increase under tactile and painful stimuli, but the more premature the baby the larger the response to a painful stimulus. It is thought best to assume that premature babies can feel pain.
