摘要
Laser material processing has been carried out in the past using circular or rectangular beams. This paper presents an investigation into the effects of different beam geometries on heating/cooling rates and temperature gradients. The beam geometries presently investigated are circular, rectangular and triangular. Finite element modelling technique has been used to simulate the steady state and transient effects of a moving beam for laser surface treatment (e.g. transformation hardening,) on mild steel and stainless steel. The temperature distributions, cooling rates and thermal gradients have been compared.
