Schistosomiasis afflicts more than 200 million people worldwide. Because international travel is commonplace, physicians around the world need to consider, recognize, and treat this prevalent parasitic infection. This article reviews the life cycle, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of schistosome parasite infections, focusing on intestinal and hepatosplenic schistosomiasis.
