Measuring Pedagogical and Psychological Knowledge in Teacher Education: Development of a test instrument

Teachers' professional knowledge represents a crucial factor concerning the quality of lessons and students' performance. Besides curricular and didactical contents, professional knowledge also consists of pedagogical-psychological knowledge. Research has so far focused on curricular and didactical knowledge; with few studies dedicated to the pedagogical-psychological knowledge of teachers. Considering existing studies and standards for teacher education, the present work stemming from the KIL project (Measuring professional competencies in mathematical and natural-scientific teacher education) postulates ten facets of pedagogical-psychological knowledge for teacher students and constructs a performance test. An item pool for the ten facets was generated and a pilot study (N = 1276) was implemented in twelve universities in Germany. Seven scales indicate sufficient reliability and validity.
