Dynamic simulation of in-plane transverse displacement of tape

In-plane transverse motion of an axially moving magnetic tape in a tape transport is investigated experimentally and compared with numerical predictions. The effects of tension and bending stiffness are evaluated for tension values on the order of 1 N and frequencies of lateral tape motion on the order of 1 kHz. The equation of motion for the displacement of a single span of tape between two reels is solved numerically subject to experimentally measured boundary and initial conditions. Very good agreement is found between measurement and numerical simulation in the frequency range of lateral tape displacement up to 1 kHz.
