KOMA: THE CROCODILE MOTIF IN THE ROCK ART OF THE NORTHERN SOTHO

During initiation rituals various icons are employed as physical representations of important symbols. They are often used in instruction regarding important issues of adulthood. This paper concentrates on one such symbol that takes the form of a particular painted motif found in association with Northern Sotho boys' initiation. The local inhabitants call this motif koma. As a painted image, koma operates on a level surpassing other initiation icons. While other icons are only revealed during initiation ceremonies, this painted image remains in constant view. This prompts a discussion on how this symbol is perceived in the construction and expression of the initiates' transformed male identity.
