摘要
Heavy metals represent a category of pollutants generated by both natural and anthropic sources with serious negative health and environmental impacts. Their removal from wastewaters remains a challenge still, especially at low concentrations. Adsorption of metal ions using conventional and non-conventional sorbents including microorganisms, is one of the frequently applied and studied removal technologies. However, the available scientific literature offers insufficient data regarding the sustainability of this process using various types of materials. Therefore, the current study aims to analyze and compare the available research concerning the environmental impacts of conventional and microbial-based adsorbents. In this sense, a closer perspective is given to the application of Life Cycle Assessment methodology (LCA).
