Boeli van Leeuwen and the damned of the earth

In the works of Boeli van Leeuwen (Curacao), father-son relations and faith are the main themes, an essential element of which is the wretched of the earth. The existential quest of the earliest protagonists is rather self-centred, but the later works show an increasing interest in social outcasts, erected by Van Leeuwen as examples of authenticity. Through solidarity with the poor one can come to terms with an indifferent God and a purposeless existence.
