Freud's functional concept of psychoanalysis does not only have interpretative but pedagogic and authoritative features as well. So the so-called 'classical method' turns out to have been a biased tradition. Although now generally discarded the classical method still influences analysts to a substantial degree because it exerts an unconscious effect as a superego which promises to shield the analyst from the inherent uncertainty of analytic encounter.
