Co-generation of electricity and heat from biogas: Efficiency and exhaust emission characteristics

Minimizing NOx levels in the exhaust gas resulted in increased emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons (CnHm) and a lower electrical efficiency of reciprocating biogas engines. Also, NOx and formaldehyde (HCHO) levels were found to be interdependent. The lowest HCHO emissions were measured in conjunction with NOx concentrations far above limit values. The use of a catalytic converter effectively reduced CO and formaldehyde levels in the exhaust gas but showed little effect on remaining CnHm. Over time, a decrease in electrical efficiency was observed for all five CHPU under investigation. While the engine lifetimes had not been reached yet, measured electrical efficiency values were 2 to 3% lower on average than manufacturer's specifications. This has a significant impact on the economic efficiency of biogas installations.
