Self-esteem and body satisfaction of ballerinas

Objective: To verify the level of self-esteem and body satisfaction of amateur dancers. Material and Methods: quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was used that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, body satisfaction and self-esteem. Data were tabulated using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS (R)), version 18.0. The Research Ethics Committee of Unimontes, n degrees 3.289.419/2019, approved the project. Results: of the 41 dancers participating in this study, the average age was 19.44 (+/- 7.76) years and an average of 4.73 (+/- 3.91) years of ballet practice. Regarding body satisfaction, more than 40% of the participants are dissatisfied with their own body, also presenting low level of self-esteem, with prevalence higher than 90%. Conclusion: it was found a high prevalence of body dissatisfaction as well as a low level of self-esteem among dancers, and the normal weight and body-satisfied dancers had better self-esteem.
