Prototype studies of a hinged-barge wave-energy conversion system

Descriptions of two prototype studies of a 40-meter long, 4-meter wide hinged-barge power system are presented. This system, called the McCabe Wave Pump, is designed to convert the energy of ocean waves, first, into the pitching-motion energy of power barges and, then, into hydraulic power. The primary hydraulic system was a closed oil circuit in the first (1996) deployment, and an open water system in the second (present) deployment. For both, ambient water is drawn into a separate hydraulic system which, in turn, supplies the water to a reverse-osmosis desalination plant or a turbo-electric power plant located on shore.
