The 2011 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Bridge Design Manual provides preliminary design charts for selecting the girder size and number of prestressing strands for a given span length and beam spacing but only for f'(c) = 55 MPa. The exclusive consideration of this girder concrete strength may limit the usefulness of the charts, particularly for ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Accordingly, this paper presents a general procedure to develop preliminary design charts based on the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications for prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders considering service load stress limits and flexural strength. The procedure is illustrated for a BT-72 beam and finally, the impact of using UHPC in prestressed concrete bridge design is evaluated via the LRFD design charts.
