Painful Pediatric Pilomatrixoma: a Diagnostic Challenge

Introduction and objective: Pilomatrixoma is a benign tumor derived from the hair follicle that normally presents in pediatric patients as a painless nodule in the head and neck area.Method: the case of a 9-year-old patient with a history of a painful left preauricular nodule of 7 months of evolution is presented. The initial ultrasound diagnosis was of a lipoma or sebaceous cyst, with pathology being the key for the final diagnosis.Results: to highlight the diagnostic difficulty of epidermal lesions in the cervico-facial area and to study pilomatrixoma as a differential diagnosis.Discussion: pilomatrixoma is defined as one of the most frequent tumors in the cervicofacial area in pediatric age. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and the recurrence rate is minimal.Conclusions: it is necessary to know pilomatrixoma as a frequent pediatric tumor in the head and neck area.
