Membranes and membrane processes. III - Applications of membrane processes in water treatment

Some aspects concerning the specific applications of membrane processes in water and wastewater treatment are presented. In this order, the basic physical-chemical and biological processes that characterize the water treatment are studied in the present work. The advantages of membranes processes in drinking water treatment and industrial water compared to classical technologies are also evaluated. The technologies based on the development of membrane reactors constitute a major step in water treatment processes. Some fundamental aspects concerning the function and the properties of bipolar membranes as well as their use for the production of acids and bases from the corresponding salts by electrodialytic water dissociation are discussed.
