Creep failure of seamless steel pipe in a crude oil preheating furnace

摘要：
Pipe failures occurred after about 6 years of operation. Investigation showed the microstructures of failed pipe were not uniform across the cross section. Pipe hardness was greater at the surface than elsewhere. Thermal stresses, pipe thinning, and overloading led to rupture. New inspection techniques and temperature and pressure controls were implemented to prevent future failures.
