Hedgehogs as a possible reservoir of sarcoptic mange for wild and domestic ruminants

Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus, Hemiechinus auritus) infested with Sarcoptes scabiei were caught in three zoological gardens and in three small ruminant farms (one sheep and two goats) where sarcoptic mange was diagnosed. The infested hedgehogs might have served as a reservoir of S. scabiei for the domestic and wild ruminants in these sites. It is suggested that hedgehogs might play a role in the epidemiology of sarcoptic mange.
