A critical review is presented of the clinical characteristics of arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (temporal or cranial arteritis), based on selected international literature on the issue. The current diagnostic possibilities, and the role of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and some other hematologic factors in temporal arteritis is highlighted, with special reference to the role of temporal artery biopsy in patients with clinically suspected temporal arteritis. Also, various treatment options are discussed.
