High efficiency microwave and millimeter-wave electro-optical modulation with whispering-gallery resonators

摘要：
We present an electro-optic modulator based on a toroidal lithium niobate cavity superimposed with a stripline resonator. We achieve modulator controlling power of about 1 mW with the microwave resonance (quality-factor Q similar to 10(2)) tuned to the 9 GHz free spectral range of optical whispering-gallery modes (Q similar to 5X10(6)). Operated as a photonic receiver, the device has a sensitivity of about 2.5 nW. Preliminary results with a 33 GHz prototype are also reported. Further efficiency improvement will enable various applications of the device in microwave photonics.
