Compressive Strength and Microstructure of Fly Ash and Metakaolin Geopolymer Blend Towards NaOH Concentration

摘要
The aims of this study were to investigate the use of fly ash and metakaolin blend in assessing the effect of NaOH concentration on geopolymer pastes. Various concentration of alkaline solution is added to activate the precursors and the influence of the strength was also investigated by changing the alkaline solution concentrations (6M, 8M, 10M, 12M and 14M). Porosity, water absorption and compressive strength were recorded and analysed. The compressive strength tests were tested at 7 and 28 days, respectively. 14M NaOH concentration indicated the highest strength of 32 MPa at 7 days of testing. The highest strength geopolymeric paste with the compressive strength in the order of 43.61 MPa at 28 days can be obtained by activating fly ash and metakaolin blend with 10 M NaOH. This ratio, the fly ash and metakaolin geopolymer blend produced maximum strength results and the analysis of the structure through SEM led to the formation of denser matrix of hydration products having a considerable influence from the structure of optimum NaOH concentration.
