Overview of the COE program

The big change expected in the 21st century includes the revolution of industrial structure and it is thought that people engaging in knowledge industries will increase in the future. The aim of this COE program is development of information technologies for the basis of coming knowledge society as well as development of human resources to support such a society. The establishment of studies for boundary areas to other fields is especially pursued, while collaborations with local communities and overseas base centers are featured. In this program, the school of informatics specialties, such as algorithms, basic theory, multimedia understanding, artificial intelligence, database and web are combined systematically and specialties such as intellectual information media, database and web technology which are playing a main role in information distribution evolution will be further developed. In addition, establishment of research fields for boundary areas to other fields (agriculture, medicine, economy, law, education and psychology) is focused. For these purposes, development of human resources for the information technology field is performed by local collaboration as field works, cooperative research at overseas base centers.
