Formulas have been obtained that relate the gain of the optical system of an astronomical television camera and the limiting SNR in optoelectronic and television systems for observing low-contrast objects on a bright background. Electronic-engineering and optical interpretations of the resulting dependences are given. (C) 1997 The Optical Society of America.
