Design of base station antenna using ACP technology for mobile communication

Mobile communication is in ever expanding demand. To cater for the rapid increase in the number of users, the overall capacity of the service must be increased. A very important component of any mobile communication system is the base station antenna. In this work, a single element patch antenna was designed using ACP technique, operating at 1.8GHz, which gave a bandwidth of approximately 16% at a VSWR of 2.0. This single element has been incorporated into the four element linear arrays. The arrays used a corporate feed network and resulted in a bandwidth of approximately 16% for a 10-dB return loss. Dual polarisation was also implemented in a single element patch antenna to increase the system capacity. A technique based on the maximum and minimum current on a transmission line was used to increase port isolation resulting in 40dB isolation.
