A comparison of Le Docteur Pascal by E Zola and Van Oude mensen... by L. Couperus reveals striking resemblances between these two novels. Remarquable symmetries link the chief characters as well as the way in which the authors deal with the themes of space and writing. Both books thus seem to mirror each other, revealing the mechanics of the ineluctable determinism underlying these naturalist writings.
