摘要
Environmental concerns have increased in recent times due to the combination of two factors: government regulations and environmental demands. This study analyzes the exports of Brazilian ethanol to the European Union, from 2000 to 2014, focusing on the implementation of the European Directives (2009) that encourage the increase of biofuels consumption. This is a quali-quantitative study. The period witnessed a sharp drop in Brazilian exports of ethanol to the European Union and intensified protective actions linked to the European industries, technical barriers and subsidies. Final considerations focus on 'commoditization' of ethanol, intergovernmental agreements, the expansion of Brazilian public policies and the creation of a sector in the World Trade Organization to regulate the trade of biofuels.
