Phase synchronization effects in chaotic and noisy oscillators

In this review we discuss phase synchronization properties of noisy and chaotic oscillations. Classical results for the synchronization of periodic self sustained oscillations subject to a noisy driving are described and compared with recently studied phase synchronization phenomena for chaotic oscillators. Effects of synchronization by external force and mutual synchronization are illustrated with the Rossler and Lorenz models. The synchronization is shown to have a clear interpretation in terms of Lyapunov exponents and periodic orbits. A possibility to infer phase synchronization from bivariate time series is demonstrated.
