The Heidelberg research project Paths Into the Profession" studies the vocational careers of Baden-Wurttemberg students of the teaching profession who passed their first state exam for teachers for primary and lower secondary schools between 1995 and 1997. First results show that about half of all graduates have not yet obtained a permanent position as public school teachers. The study focusses on just this group of graduates with often highly individual vocational reorientations, but also with sometimes open, sometimes hidden forms of teacher unemployment and the related strategies of coping with this situation.
