Heat switch limitations on multi-stage magnetic refrigeration

Heat switches have long been successfully used in single stage Magnetic Refrigerators. The recent rekindled interest in multi-stage magnetic coolers and the use of magnetically controlled isothermal stages place stricter requirements on the performance of heat switches. This paper reviews the application of heat switches to single stage magnetic coolers. It then shows how the heat switch requirements are different for isothermal stages and cascaded multi-stage coolers. In the two latter cases, heat switches do not perform as wen as they do for single stage coolers. This significantly affects the design of multi-stage systems.
