Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system. It is the most common disabling neurological disease among young adults. The aetiology of this condition, which affects approximately 85 000 people in the UK, is unknown. It has been suggested that environmental factors including nutrition may be involved in its development in susceptible individuals. In the past, it has been suggested that milk and dairy products could exacerbate, cause relapses in, and even progress the symptoms of MS. This paper discusses the role of dairy products and their components in relation to MS, and is based on recently published research.
